Last month, the IRCC announced four new pathways to permanent residence for people working in Canada. The program opens up for registration today, May 6, 2021 at 12:00 PM EST. The programs are temporary—it will expire November 5, 2021 or when the cap is reached, so make sure to apply soon! Find out if you fit into any of the four categories below: 

1. People who recently graduated from a Canadian post-secondary institution must:

  • Have graduated recently (after January 2017) from a designated learning institution 
  • Have received one of the following: 
    • A degree that took at least 8 months, 
    • A diploma, certificate, or attestation that is the equivalent of a two-year credential (at least 16 months), or 
    • A degree, diploma, certificate, or attestation from a program of any length related to one of the fields listed here in Annex A
  • Have received a minimum of CLB 5 in either French or English in each of the four language skill areas 
  • Be currently working in Canada with a valid work permit, and not be self-employed unless you are a doctor 
  • Be physically present in Canada at the time of application  
  • Intend to live anywhere in Canada except Quebec 
  • Not be inadmissible  
  • Cap: 40,000

2. French-speakers who recently graduated from a Canadian post-secondary institution must:

  • Meet the same requirements as those listed in part 1 
  • Have received a minimum of CLB 5 in French in each of the four language skill areas  
  • Cap: No limit

3. People who work in essential occupations must:

  • Have at least one year of full-time work experience in Canada (or the equivalent of 1560 hours part-time) in either stream A or B: 
    • Stream A: your work experience must be in one of the health-related occupations listed here in Annex A 
    • Stream B: your work experience must be in one of the other essential occupations listed here in Annex B  
  • Have received a minimum of CLB 4 in either French or English in each of the four language skill areas 
  • Be currently working in Canada with a valid work permit, and not be self-employed unless you are a doctor 
  • Be physically present in Canada at the time of application  
  • Intend to live anywhere in Canada except Quebec 
  • Not be inadmissible  
  • Cap for stream A: 20,000 
  • Cap for stream B: 30,000

4. French-speakers who work in essential occupations

  • Meet the same requirements as those listed in part 3 
  • Have received a minimum of CLB 4 in French in each of the four language skill areas 
  • Cap: No limit

Anisha Nag


Anisha Nag is a Juris Doctor student at Osgoode Hall Law School. She has extensive experience in immigration and refugee law and aspires to practice in this area of law upon her graduation in 2022. In 2021, Anisha participated in Osgoode Hall’s Intensive Program in Immigration and Refugee Law and completed a legal internship at the law office of Raoul Boulakia. Volunteer work is very important to Anisha. She has done pro bono legal research for the Centre for Refugee Studies and the Empowerment Council. She currently volunteers at the refugee shelter Romero House where she serves as an English as a Second Language tutor for teenaged refugees.
